Historic Dunbar Hotel

Project Summary

The Historic Dunbar Hotel has been recently renovated into a 43 unit Senior Affordable Housing apartment building. In the thirties and forties, the Dunbar Hotel was the center of the West Coast jazz scene and the first African-American owned hotel in Los Angeles.

The removal of hazardous asbestos, drywall and extensive structural floor are included in the improvements. The project features the addition of fire sprinklers and fire alarm, new drywall, roof, cabinets, and granite counter tops. Substantial energy efficient upgrades include LED light, HVAC, new Energy Star appliances, elevator, solar electric and all new water saving plumbing. Residents also enjoy amenities like new community room, laundry room, and beautiful glass enclosed central courtyard.

Alongside the Dunbar Hotel, are the two existing Somerville Apartments, which are now renovated family housing. All three properties are connected to create the Dunbar Village, an 85-unit mixed-use, intergenerational community for seniors and families.
